Dierry "Dougy Style" Jean and Cleotis "Mookie" Pendarvis are set to fight on Friday, May 10 at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla., but only one will walk away victorious.
And it's not going to be Pendarvis.
The 10-round elimination bout will air on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET (it will be tape delayed for 11 p.m. PT) and will decide the No. 1 spot in the IBF's 140-pound division. According to Steve Farhood of ShoBox, the winner will face Lamont Peterson:
Jean is a Canadien fighter who brings an undefeated record of 24-0 to the big event, while Pendarvis hails from California and is coming off a five-fight win streak, owning a record of 17-3-2.
Pendarvis features a more technical approach to the sport than Jean, who favors a blunt style of boxing. He's slick and smooth, but he doesn't bring much in the way of power to the fight. Of his 17 victories, only six have come by way of knockout, and the last time that happened was back in 2010.
He's fought some tough opponents in his career, which is why he's getting this shot to face Peterson even though he's lost three fights. That said, if Pendarvis is to win this fight, he'll need to last the full 10 rounds. He must win on the scorecards, because he's not going to knock Jean out.
Of Jean's 24 victories, 16 have come by way of knockout. He's a quick, powerful puncher who recently dispatched Juan Jesus Rivera in two rounds, knocking him down twice in each round before the referee called the fight.
Should Jean win this upcoming fight, he'll get a shot at a world title fight, and you can be sure he's not taking Pendarvis lightly with so much on the line.
He told reporters recently that he expects the fight to be a technical battle but believes he'll win by KO or TKO in the latter rounds, per Daniel Cloutier of pound4pound.com:
...it will be certainly more a technical fight than a physical fight. I like my chance to win by KO or TKO in the last four rounds (a 12 rounds fight). I know I am more energetic than him. As you know, my stamina is a great weapon in the second half of each bout.
His record speaks for itself, and Jean will take his biggest step toward becoming a world champion this Friday night with a big knockout victory over Pendarvis.
Final Prediction
Pendarvis will be a tricky opponent for Jean...for the first few rounds, that is.
That said, this fight won't go past Round 6.
Jean simply brings too much power to the fight. He will win by knocking out Pendarvis in the sixth round, and he'll likely get him on the mat a couple of times before the final blow.
