What a night of fights in Atlantic City!
In our main event Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO) absolutely blitzed IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-2-1, 16 KO), dropping him three times, forcing referee Steve Smoger to halt the bout in the third round.
Peterson began the fight well, working behind a stiff jab, but was unable to land anything that would keep his power punching opponent at bay. In the second round Matthysse connected with a left hand that dropped Peterson and from there the rout was on.
With the win Matthysse sets himself up for a shot at unified junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia in the fall.
In the opening contest, IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (26-1, 14 KO) outclassed and dominated late substitute Lee Purdy of England winning via TKO at the end of the seventh round.
From the opening bell it was clear Alexander was the quicker, more polished fighter, and he peppered his opponent with power shots in close right up until the stoppage. At the end of round seven Purdy's corner had seen enough and called a halt to the bout.
