Mayweather vs. Guerrero Weigh-In: Major Takeaways from Pre-Fight Extravaganza
May 4th 2013, 11:00

Nowadays, the little staredown we saw at the weigh-in for Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. and Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero is pedestrian when compared to the near brawls that occur at some pre-fight events.

Where are Zab Judah and Angel Garcia when you need them? Even with almost no extra-curricular activities, there were a few takeaways from the pre-fight event.

The Weights

Officially, Money was a svelte 146 pounds while the Ghost was 147 pounds. It was obvious looking at both men that conditioning shouldn't be a factor for anyone.

The Dads Didn't Scrap Either

Part of the reason the press conference from Thursday was more eventful than the weigh-in was because of the fighters' fathers.

The Ghost's dad, Ruben Guerrero, yelled insults at Mayweather Jr. and nearly came to blows with Mayweather Sr.

Check out this exchange from Thursday's media day. (Profane language throughout)

They even swear like old men. I thought we might see another fight added to the undercard from boxing's senior division, but things had simmered down by Friday.

However, the elder Guerrero did find time to represent with the Mexican flag on stage.

Mental Edge and Crowd Response

Both Guerrero and Mayweather Jr. looked confident and poised. Guerrero was the most demonstrative as he played to the crowd and appeared relaxed and comfortable.

As for crowd reaction, the predominant reaction to Mayweather's arrival was negative. There were a few cheers to be heard, but when the financial numbers are this lopsided, I'm sure Money can handle the boos.

Mayweather has been through this process so many times, the negative response probably wouldn't bother him even if his purse wasn't astronomical.

I do wonder, though, if at some point, the hate begins to wear on him. After all, he is a human being. Even someone like Mayweather can't enjoy being the most hated man in the room on a consistent basis.

If only Bob Arum were there to help divide the malice from the crowd.

Guerrero's reaction was more mixed, but he has been portrayed as the hero throughout the pre-fight process.

He's smart to fall into that role. It will likely lead to him having a fairly sizable contingent at the MGM Grand on Saturday night.

Ultimately, the fight will be settled in the ring, and Guerrero will have his chance to take down a legend.
