Mayweather vs. Guerrero: What The Ghost Must Do to Earn Rematch with Money May
May 6th 2013, 11:00

Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. was dominant once again in the ring Saturday night against opponent Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, but don't count out a rematch in the future as the always-hungry Guerrero will pursue whatever it takes to make that a reality.

Although it's undisputed that Money May was by far the best boxer in the ring Saturday, a rematch could benefit both fighters and will be a road each boxer considers taking in the near future.

Even before the fight, this seemed to be a big possibility as ESPN reported a rematch clause is set in the Mayweather-Guerrero contract as prescribed by Mayweather's camp.

Obviously the landscape for any rematch changes drastically after the results of the first fight, but the simple fact that Money May wanted this clause in the contract shows his interest in the possibility. The Ghost showed a lot of heart by going 12 rounds and imposed some problems for Money May early on.

So, what can The Ghost do to make that a reality?

Guerrero must immediately take aim at Mayweather's most daunting recent opponents to prove he deserves a rematch more so than Money's other victims.

The obvious choice at first is Miguel Cotto. Just before serving a two-month jail sentence (h/t ESPN) stemming from a misdemeanor battery case, Mayweather defeated Cotto in a hard-fought match that left many spectators admiring Cotto as much as the winner.

Cotto was able to do much more to irritate Mayweather in their bout, asserting dominance over Money at times with powerful hooks and a bullish mentality. It didn't turn into victory, but it gained him some fans in the process and amplified talk of a rematch between the two.

If Guerrero can take down Cotto in impressive fashion, it will immediately give him a huge argument in his case for a Mayweather rematch. But he'll likely need more than that with the undefeated boxer picking his final five fights carefully.

After beating Cotto, The Ghost will have to look toward either another Mayweather victim or a buzz-generating boxer in the weight class.

Perhaps Victor Ortiz would be a solid matchup. Ortiz gave Mayweather fits before being taken down in controversial fashion and he remains one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world at the moment.

The list goes on and on, but what The Ghost cannot afford to do is schedule an opponent that doesn't have ties to Mayweather.

If he wants another shot at glory against the 36-year-old champion, he'll need to quickly prove why he deserves that shot.
