Boxing fans, Floyd Mayweather has granted your wish.
Money will fight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 14, 2013, and the master is going to take his young challenger to task in front of what is sure to be a rabid crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mayweather made the highly anticipated announcement via his official Twitter account, sending boxing fans in a frenzy of excitement:
According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Money May will move up to Canelo's weight class and fight at 152 pounds.
After Mayweather's easy victory over Robert Guerrero, who was overmatched from the outset, it was clear Money would need to set up a megafight like this to satisfy the masses.
While it was fun watching him toy with Guerrero for a while, it was frankly boring towards the end of the fight. The Ghost had no chance of beating Mayweather, who used superior quickness, speed and skill to dominate the action.
Fans clamored for Mayweather to set up a fight with Alvarez, but the reality of such a matchup seemed too good to be true.
Now, we all get what we want. But in the end, Mayweather is still Money, and he's going to annihilate Canelo when they step into the ring on September 14.
Alvarez is a punishing power puncher who has never lost a fight.
His career record is 42-0-1, and he's knocked out his opponent an eye-popping 30 times. He's young, he's fresh and he's undefeated, but he's never faced a fighter like Mayweather before.
Where Alvarez looks to attack, Mayweather looks to counter.
Alvarez is all about offense, while Mayweather's entire career has been defined by his unbreakable defense. Where Alvarez looks for the knockout, Mayweather inevitably finds a weakness and slowly begins to exploit it.
And you can be sure he'll find a weakness to exploit against Canelo—he always does. He'll utilize his unrivaled quickness and footwork to dance circles around Alvarez, and though he may not knock Canelo out, he'll clearly win on the score cards.
It won't be surprising to see Canelo knock Mayweather to the ground once or twice given his power, but in the end Money May will prove to be the superior fighter.
The greatest thing about this fight is that after Mayweather wins, nobody can say he didn't fight the best. Canelo is certainly Mayweather's top challenger right now, and the next-best boxer isn't even close.
This fight will secure Mayweather's legacy as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of his generation, and after he wins, it will be fascinating to see what he comes up with for an encore.
