Floyd Mayweather notched another victory to his career, this time over Robert Guerrero.
As a result, let's turn our attention to other welterweights capable of challenging Money for the title. Anyone with this opportunity will also have the obvious chance of giving Mayweather his first loss.
So, there's a bit of an added motivation.
In order for Mayweather to continue building his resume, fighting against top contenders is required before he puts down the gloves. As written by Jon Saraceno of USA Today , Money has a limited number of bouts remaining:
Fight fans who admire Mayweather's peerless ring rhythm won't be able to enjoy him long, and the champion reiterated that after his victory.
"I've got five more fights and I'm through with the sport,'' said Mayweather.
To that end, competing against the best available simply enhances Mayweather's legacy. It is also good for the sport.
Timothy Bradley
The appeal of Timothy Bradley taking on Mayweather has potential to increase. Later this year, Bradley will battle Juan Manuel Marquez to defend his WBO title.
Currently sporting a 30-0 record, Bradley has the scrappy and tough style to break through Mayweather's defense. Although it's not the most attractive of approaches, Bradley has proven the tolerance to take hits and counter effectively.
His ability to adjust will help as well.
Bradley displayed this during his title defense versus Ruslan Provodnikov in March. Going straight to Mayweather won't work, but Bradley's sly movements will capitalize on open looks to rack up points.
Juan Manuel Marquez
Although Marquez already fought Mayweather, a victory over Bradley in September and he'll deserve another opportunity.
Plus, Marquez and Mayweather fought in 2009 and plenty has occurred since then. The counter-punch that destroyed Manny Pacquiao's face into oblivion sums up Marquez's talent.
Money, however, rarely leaves himself vulnerable to such attacks and pairs that with incredible defense after attempting to strike. If anything, Marquez maintaining the utmost level of patience will be to his advantage as a strong counter-attacker that is capable of slipping past Mayweather's defense.
Manny Pacquiao
This one is certainly obvious, but not as appealing as it was a few years ago.
Pacquiao has lost two straight, each to the aforementioned boxers above. Still, the chess match of Pacquiao's offense versus Mayweather's defense is an intriguing matchup.
Money's ability to dodge attacks with ease won't happen so smoothly against Pac-Man. On the contrary, Pacquiao cannot constantly be on the offensive. Doing so will leave him more vulnerable to counterattacks, an area Money proved to be quite efficient on Saturday.
The exciting aspect of this fight, though, would be watching each fighter's reactions. Both are extremely quick when moving, which enhances the impact when a big hit connects.
