When Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0) defeated Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1) Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas via a unanimous decision, the champion proved he was still the best in the world.
Guerrero came out in the first round full of energy and pushing the tempo just as he did in his previous victory over Andre Berto, but the difference was Mayweather’s defensive skill set and lateral speed.
While Guerrero was the aggressor for the first two rounds, he did not land any substantial blows and could not string together any sort of combination. Using his ability to bob-and-weave, Money was able to avoid contact while allowing The Ghost to tire himself out.
Once the pace began to slow during the middle of the fight, Mayweather was able to use his elite counterpunching abilities to stick and move when Guerrero would inch his way forward to the inside.
Money never became too aggressive in this fight, but while Guerrero was swinging wildly in the middle-to-late rounds, Mayweather was picking his spots and landing stiff shots.
By the time the 10th round had arrived, it was clear that Mayweather had done the most damage to his opponent and was in line for a decision victory. That’s when Money shifted his attack into neutral and began to watch the clock.
Mayweather was just doing whatever it took to hold on to the victory, but the crowd was growing restless at the lack of action from the once show-stopping fighter. Even boxing legend George Foreman noted that Money wasn’t as aggressive as he should’ve been:
While Money wasn’t aggressive, he has earned the right as an undefeated boxer to protect his record in the ring. If how he fought Saturday’s main event is the way he believes he can keep his record unblemished, the fans may not like it, but that’s his prerogative.
The speed, quickness and defensive prowess that Mayweather possesses makes him arguably the greatest fighter of the modern generation and one of the greatest of all time, but the focus was on how much of a factor Father Time would play in the result of this fight.
After utterly dominating Guerrero and executing his game plan to perfection, it’s clear that Mayweather is far from done being the most dangerous boxer in the world.
