Leading up to the welterweight title showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero, Guerrero’s father/trainer, Ruben Guerrero, has been very vocal about his son winning on May 4 and about how much he dislikes Mayweather Jr. and his dad, Floyd Mayweather Sr. (via Yahoo Sports).
With every opportunity the elder Guerrero gets he will say Robert will hand Mayweather Jr. his first loss and that he thinks that Mayweather Jr. and Mayweather Sr. are garbage.
The elder Guerrero held no punches, even calling out Mayweather Jr. as being a “woman-beater” at the final press conference Wednesday, in reference to the charges Mayweather Jr. spent two months in the Clark County Detention Center last summer.
With this fight being the biggest stage Robert has been on, there is already added pressure of the tremendous media coverage and what is at stake when he gets in the ring with Mayweather Jr.—Money and Fame.
Add to that the looming court date for the felony gun charges that the younger Guerrero got after trying to take an unloaded gun on a plane in New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport in late March (via ESPN); Robert will have some serious issues on his mind.
With his father pumping up his name so much, the pressure on Robert’s shoulders grows each day, and at some point it may begin to affect him mentally as the bout draws near.
At times Ruben has been over-the-top with his antics, reminiscent of junior welterweight titlist Danny Garcia’s father/trainer Angel Garcia. In the Garcias' case they seemingly feed off each other in a perfect balance, as the bigger the fight, the more Angel mouths off and the better Garcia has fought so far.
To have any shot at beating Mayweather Jr. one will have to be 100 percent focused not only physically, but mentally too.
We have seen fighters talk the talk, but once they’re in the ring with Mayweather Jr. they seem to freeze up and fight uncharacteristically out of their style. This can be attributed to being caught up in such a large spectacle that they don’t know what to do when the lights are on them.
No one has really paid much attention to Ruben thus far, and now that all eyes are on them he is soaking in his 15 minutes of fame, but it could come at his son’s cost as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career.
