No matter who he is fighting, it seems like everyone has an opinion on how Floyd Mayweather will fare. That is once again the case as Mayweather will defend his WBC Welterweight Championship against Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Fans, experts, celebrities and everyone in between is tweeting about the fight and making predictions. Some are more scientific than others, but all of them are interesting for one reason or another. Mayweather is a bona-fide star in a sport that has lost support over the years, so all of his fights are of the utmost importance.
One celebrity who has taken a particular interest in Mayweather is pop star Justin Bieber. There doesn't appear to be a lot of crossover appeal when it comes to Mayweather and Bieber, but Bieber has accompanied Mayweather to the ring before and seems to be a big fan of "Money" and his fighting style.
Bieber's comments could potentially be written off as a friend sticking by his buddy, but he wasn't afraid to toss his prediction out there.
While Bieber isn't exactly going out on a limb as Mayweather is already 43-0, his pick is now plastered everywhere. There probably aren't a lot of boxing fans who follow Bieber closely, but there are probably suddenly quite a few pre-teen girls who have taken an interest in boxing because of him.
Bieber is arguably the biggest name to sound off on Twitter about the Mayweather vs. Guerrero fight, but there are plenty of fans getting in on the action as well. This Twitter user makes an interesting point regarding Guerrero's supposed game plan against Mayweather.
Guerrero has talked plenty about having the blueprint necessary to hand Mayweather his first loss, but it must be a blueprint that Guerrero drew up himself. Nobody has been able to beat Mayweather in the past whereas Guerrero does have one loss on his record and has looked shaky in a draw as well as two no-contests.
One person who is never short on opinions is ESPN's Stephen A. Smith. He and Skip Bayless debate the biggest topics in sports on First Take every day, so Mayweather vs. Guerrero naturally came up on Friday's show. Smith has shown support for Mayweather in the past and that continued.
Smith picking Mayweather isn't a big surprise as most pundits have done the same, but a 10th-round knockout isn't expected by most. Although 26 of Mayweather's 43 wins have come by way of knockout, six of his past eight fights have gone the distance and Mayweather is generally happy to go to the scorecards.
Not everyone is firmly in Mayweather's corner, however. This Twitter user fully understands Mayweather's accolades, but he firmly believes that Guerrero will be able to do what nobody else has by beating Mayweather and doing it on the scorecards for that matter.
A Guerrero win isn't outside the realm of possibility, but winning via decision is a tall order. Mayweather's stamina is unmatched and his ability to get better as the fight goes on is uncanny. Because of that, Guerrero's best bet may be going for the knockout even though that is far from a sure thing.
Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett also got into the act on Twitter. Apparently Shiflett is a huge boxing fan as he has been very opinionated about Mayweather and his credentials. Not only did Shiflett call Mayweather "the most overrated fighter in boxing," but he also picked apart Mayweather's resume.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but wins over fighters like Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Arturo Gatti speak for themselves. Guerrero's track record doesn't compare to Mayweather's, but Shiflett seems to believe that "The Ghost" can win the fight.
Shiflett is proof that not everyone is buying in to Mayweather being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but this Twitter user seems to echo the sentiments of many on Twitter. There is a lot of Mayweather support and most seem to think that he won't have much of an issue defeating Guerrero to move to 44-0.
The Miami Heat easily dispatched of the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the NBA playoffs, so Mayweather would probably have to score an early knockout win to equal Miami's dominance.
Regardless of how the fight ultimately plays out, though, there is no question that Twitter will be buzzing and there will either be a ton of gloating or a ton of excuses early Sunday morning.
