Anniversary of Mike Tyson Biting Evander Holyfield's Ear
Jun 28th 2013, 19:41, by Tristan Thornburgh

On June 28, 1997, heavyweights Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson squared off in their second meeting that ended in a way that no sporting has ever ended before: one fighter's ear having a bite taken out of it.

After being dominated for two rounds by Holyfield, Tyson left his corner without his mouthguard before he was told to put it back in. Then, 40 seconds into the round, Tyson rolled his head onto Holyfield's shoulder and bit a one-inch piece of cartilage off of Holyfield's left ear then spit it onto the mat.

The fight continued after a few minutes, and the referee told Tyson if he did it again, he'd be disqualified. Tyson attempted another bite, this time on Holyfield's left ear, and the fight was stopped.

Tyson received a permanent suspension from boxing and had his boxing license cancelled forever, on top of a $3 million fine, before appealing and being allowed to fight a year later.

Now that both fighters have retired, they've actually become friends.
