Floyd Mayweather Would Be Wise to Avoid Manny Pacquiao Bout

The drama and speculation surrounding a superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao continues to swirl.

According to Pacman's adviser, Michael Koncz, per Chris Williams of Boxing News 24, Pacquiao's camp has stirred up the idea of a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout yet again, saying:

Floyd is always a possibility. We’ve always said that we would fight Floyd. I think that if Manny has an exciting and impressive win come November 24, then Floyd won’t have any excuse if he really wants to fight.

I can think of an excuse for Money not wanting to fight Pacquiao.

How about the fact that he has nothing to gain by stepping into the ring against Pacman?

Aside from monetary gain—which we already know Mayweather has plenty of—there's not a single reason for Mayweather to fight Pacquiao. He's already proven to be the best fighter right now while Pacman is heading in the opposite direction.

Having lost his last two fights, Pacquiao would have nothing to lose by going up against Mayweather at this point in his career. He already lost in a split decision to Timothy Bradley in June 2012 and was most recently knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in December.

The only way this fight will go down is if Mayweather decides to prove once and for all that he's the superior fighter over Pacquiao, but I think Money is too smart for that.

As for other reasons this fight won't go down, Williams points them out in his column.

For one, Pacquiao wants his fights to take place in Asia to avoid the high U.S. taxes, something Mayweather likely wouldn't be up for.

Secondly, the fighters would likely take a 50-50 split on the purse from the fight, and Mayweather could surely get more bang for his buck by selecting a different opponent to fight at the welterweight level.

And then there's always Mayweather's loyalty to Showtime/CBS and Pacquiao's to HBO.

I hate to be the pessimist here, but I think it's time we give up on seeing Money and Pacman square off against each other.
