Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez have been touring the U.S. to hype their September 14 bout against one another, and Money has excelled in doing so.
For as talented as Mayweather is with a pair of boxing gloves, he's just as talented at working press conferences and interviews. He knows what to say and when in order to get buzz for his fights.
When you have an opponent like Alvarez, the bout is already an intriguing one. The 22-year-old boxer has won 42 of his 43 career fights with 30 coming as a result of a knockout. Alvarez’s only blemish so far is a draw with Jorge Juarez in 2006.
That resume is worthy of entering the ring with Mayweather, who has 44 victories and 26 knockouts over his historic career. There's a reason for boxing fans to be excited for September already, and Money's words during this tour have got to add to that anticipation.
When in Washington, D.C., June 25, Mayweather told the media (via USA Today), "I'm a lot older, I'm a lot wiser, and I just go out there and let my talent do my talking."
He also discussed Alvarez in a respectful light, saying:
He's a guy I can't overlook. He's going to come and get it. He don't just want that No. 1 junior middleweight spot. He wants that No. 1 pound-for-pound spot. He wants to be the first guy to say, 'I knocked Floyd Mayweather off the throne.'
June 26 in Detroit, Money was asked if he thought he was the Muhammad Ali of his time. He replied by saying he was the Floyd Mayweather of his time and that "Muhammad Ali paved the way for a lot of fighters."
People can knock Mayweather all they want for not fighting Manny Pacquiao, but Alvarez is a quality opponent and one Money can sell to an audience.
Canelo might not give juicy quotes the way that Mayweather can, but his record speaks for itself. He's also part of Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, which adds more star power to this bout. Fans will remember Mayweather defeated De La Hoya back in 2007.
Both fighters are undefeated. Both have racked up a considerable amount of knockout victories in their careers. Alvarez has the advantage in age, but at 36, Mayweather hasn't exactly looked sluggish in his recent bouts.
In his most recent three fights, Money defeated Robert Guerrero and Miguel Cotto in unanimous decisions and knocked out Victor Ortiz.
Alvarez brings talent, while Mayweather is bringing talent and quotes that have people talking. This is a fight worth checking out, regardless of what comes out of Money's mouth. The genius is that he knows how to build anticipation for a fight people are already highly anticipating.
