Kell Brook took a risk by granting Carson Jones a rematch, but it paid off as he earned the stoppage victory in the eighth round on Saturday in Hull, England.
The former IBF international titleholder started the match strong, consistently outlanding Jones from the beginning. He even scored a knockdown in the second round thanks to a barrage of hooks and a strong uppercut, per ESPN Boxing.
That was to be expected, though. Brook opened up his July 2012 fight with Jones confidently before fading in the final rounds and nearly losing on the scorecards.
The real test for Brook would be his conditioning, as Jones would try to survive the early rounds and battle back as he did in the first fight. In the third round, Brook again looked to end the fight but was unable to do so, according to ESPN.
As Mike Coppinger of BoxingScene noted, this would have been the point in the fight where Jones needed a comeback. Brook appeared to be slowing down in the fifth round.
However, Brook didn't allow conditioning to be an issue this time. The "Special One" turned on the pressure as the bout advanced into the latter half of the scheduled 10-round fight. He worked his jab accurately and peppered Jones with combinations.
As ESPN reported, he started Round 8 with a strong flurry and eventually drew the finish.
Coppinger tweeted that the stoppage might have been early, but it was ultimately the right decision.
Brook's record now stands at a perfect 30-0. The welterweight appears primed to take a step up in competition.
With the loss, Jones falls to 35-10-3 and will likely go back to journeyman status.
