Jesus Andres Cuellar (23-1) defeated Claudio Marrero (14-1) via unanimous decision to claim the previously vacated interim WBA Featherweight Championship on Friday night at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, N.Y.
Douglass Fischer of Ring TV tweeted out the final scorecards:
The bout was marked by an incredible pace from the two featherweights, as all 12 rounds were fairly action-packed for the season finale of ESPN's Friday Night Fights series.
Cuellar went right to work from the very beginning, as he was able to stand on the outside and pick Marrero apart while his opponent fought fire with fire. However, as is the case in most boxing matches, Cuellar's accuracy and precision were far more effective than Marrero's inaccurate aggression.
The highlight of the fight for the eventual winner was a knockdown in the sixth round that really swung the momentum in his favor. Marrero continued to put up a fight throughout and should be commended for surviving all 12 rounds, but he couldn't manage to overcome Cuellar's consistent offense.
Steve Kim of Max Boxing also noted Cuellar's impressive onslaught.
With the win, Cuellar now holds an interim championship and puts himself in a better position to take on top-10 opponents in the division. He wasn't able to finish his opponent, but this was still a strong showing.
The loss has to be a real setback for Marrero. He was previously unbeaten in his professional career and will have to prove that he can bounce back from a disappointing performance to pick up the pieces moving forward.
