Before Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) squares off against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Sept. 14, the two will be featured in Showtime’s All Access program.
The biggest lesson from Episode 1 was that Alvarez is not scared of Mayweather.
Whether Canelo is able to pull out the stunning upset in September or if he is knocked out in glorious fashion by Money, it is clear from his demeanor on All Access that the Mexican superstar has the mental capability to contend with a living legend.
Fear is the worst enemy of a boxer, and while Alvarez is preparing for the fight of his life harder than he has ever before, it is not motivated by the possibility of a loss. His training is driven by the chance he could win and become a hero for the ages.
This is a much tougher test for Mayweather than many might have anticipated.
The show features Money as the typically rich athlete flaunting his money that polarizes fans and is playing the typical bad-guy role when talking to the cameras. This is what Mayweather has perfected over the years leading up to a fight, and it always builds hype for the event.
As much as Mayweather was up to his old games, Alvarez couldn’t have been more different than expected. Instead of being overwhelmed by the media attention and packed schedule, the challenger looked to be enjoying his time and working even harder than normal.
Alvarez was cool under pressure in every situation and sounded wise beyond his years. While the experience edge unquestionably goes to the undefeated legend, Canelo has proven in the toughest spots thus far in his career that he is pugnacious.
With Oscar De La Hoya deflecting much of the attention for Alvarez and preparing him for the situations Mayweather will put the young champion in, the Mexican star has a decisive advantage over many of Mayweather’s other combatants.
Canelo won’t be blindsided by any of Money’s antics and he will remain focused on the fight as the team around him does all the promotional work possible to relieve the pressure.
While many fighters would be overwhelmed, Alvarez is taking it all in stride.
If the Mexican fighter holds this confidence throughout the entirety of Showtime’s All Access show and doesn’t begin to waver, there is little doubt that he will give Mayweather everything he can handle in the ring this September.
