Mike Tyson may have hung up the gloves, but if Friday night was any indicator, he has a bright future promoting the next generation of fighters.
Fans were treated to a pair of exciting scraps in the inaugural Iron Mike Promotions Card from the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, on the season finale of ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
In the main event, IBF Super Featherweight Champion Argenis Mendez (21-2-1, 11 KO) retained his title with a majority-draw against hard-charging, but limited, Arash Usmanee (20-1-1, 10 KO).
Usmanee was the far more active fighter. He was aggressive, but often found his punches blocked or dodged by his more polished opponent. It appeared that Mendez seized control in the second-half of the fight as his superior boxing skill began allowing him to dictate the pace and counter more effectively.
Scores were 115-113 for Usmanee, 114-114 and 114-114.
In our opening contest, Jesus Cuellar (23-1, 18 KO) employed a rugged, but effective, pressure attack to hand Dominican prospect Claudio Marrero (14-1, 11 KO) the first defeat of his career by unanimous decision.
Scores were 115-112, 114-113, 116-111.
Cuellar also scored a knockdown in the sixth round, and captured the interim-WBA Featherweight Championship with the victory.
