Nathan Cleverly vs. Sergey Kovalev: Live Round-by-Round Updates and Analysis
Aug 17th 2013, 16:13, by Robert Aaron Contreras

The red mist has settled and a new champion has arisen.

Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1 with 20 KOs) walked right through the defending champion Nathan Cleverly (who drops to 26-1-0) to claim the WBO light heavyweight title via a Round 4 TKO.

It was a fabulous card, top to bottom and the fistic marvel they call the “Krusher” proved to be the best fighter in the building.

From the opening bell, Cleverly tried to take the fight to Kovalev but the challenger proved that game plan grossly ill advised, exercising his authority over the Wales native. He brutally peppered his body and head with power shots, seemingly at will.

By the end of the opening frame, Cleverly was flustered and already lacked his customary enthusiasm.

He had felt the beast’s power.

Round 2 was all Kovalev and in Round 3, Kovalev pummeled Cleverly around the ring with unstoppable combinations, officially knocking him down twice. The fight could have easily been stopped then, but referee Terry O’Conner helped the shaken champion to his corner.

Less than a minute into the fourth round Cleverly was staggered again and the bout was justifiably stopped.

Sergey Kovalev is now the new champion and on the back of absolutely blood-curdling knockout power—every light heavyweight in the world’s newly found nightmare.
