Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera is bound to be an exciting bout, but the son of the legend is going to make sure he doesn't lose two fights in a row and begin his run to retake the WBC Middleweight title with a win on Saturday night.
It's been a long year for Chavez Jr., who lost his WBC Middleweight title back in September of 2012 against Sergio Martinez by unanimous decision. It was the first loss of his fighting career, putting him at 46-1-1.
Now, Chavez Jr. is looking for a rebound fight against Vera, who is 23-6 over his career after winning the last four fights. Both fighters aren't afraid to go toe-to-toe, and this could be quite a bloody fight.
With 32 career knockouts, Chavez Jr. has no problem throwing the hard stuff. He throws plenty of power punches, and he's surprisingly accurate with them. According to CompuBox, Chavez Jr. landed 46 percent of his total punches and 50 percent of his power punches in the loss to Martinez.
Despite losing that fight, we were able to see just how powerful Chavez Jr. is, as he landed 37 power punches in the final round and even knocked down Martinez. It might have been too little too late, but it was an excellent testament to just how strong he can be, even in later rounds.
Despite the hot streak for Vera, he's going to have a hard time taking down Chavez, who isn't going to be afraid to throw punches after coming off of a loss. He's not going to out-punch or out-maneuver Chavez Jr., but he will stay in there and take a beating while throwing back his own shots.
For Chavez Jr., he will have no problem not being able to take down Vera in the earlier rounds. He has a powerful combination of power and stamina that makes him a threat to land some vicious hits even in the later rounds, and that will likely mean a win for the 27-year-old fighter and son of a boxing legend.
With the win, Chavez Jr. could begin focusing on what's next, and that means another shot at his former title and a rematch with Martinez. It may not happen the very next fight, but a win would easily put him back into the running for a shot at Martinez.
Despite all of the controversy surrounding him, Chavez Jr. is still a strong fighter who is coming off just his first ever loss in the sport. If he wins, you can bet that people will be anxiously awaiting to see if he will get a shot to retake the title that was taken away from him.
