Although Saul "Canelo" Alvarez lost to Floyd "Money" Mayweather in their big light-middleweight showdown on Saturday night, the loss won't hurt Alvarez's career.
It may have been the first loss of the fighter's career, but he wasn't expected to win this title bout.
Mayweather came in with a perfect 44-0 record and it would have taken a brilliant performance by Alvarez to win. Nobody has been able to stop the pound-for-pound champion, so there was no formula for success to follow for Alvarez and there still isn't one after "Money" came away with the victory.
Beating Mayweather would have shocked the world. It would have also taken Alvarez's career to the next level, but there is no shame in losing to a ring legend.
Of course Alvarez won't be happy with the loss. He can take away small positives from the bout, but he came into the fight looking for the victory.
The 23-year-old has had a promising start to his career. Since debuting in 2005, he had gone 42-0-1 before losing for the first time over the weekend. He had beaten the likes of Austin Trout and Shane Mosley along the way.
Alvarez has beaten nearly everyone that he has faced due to his incredible strength. He has 30 knockouts in his career, which made him an intriguing opponent for Mayweather. Everyone wanted to see if Alvarez would be able to land a few powerful punches and defeat the champion, but he couldn't do it although he put up a good fight.
Mayweather was too quick in the ring and Alvarez was on the slow side when delivering his punches. With his power, Alvarez needed to be a little bit quicker in order to be effective.
He has the strength to beat almost anybody, but Mayweather is the exception. Alvarez is too talented to rely solely on power punches. The rising star isn't quite at the elite level yet, but he's quickly becoming one of the better boxers on the scene and he should continue to improve as he gets older.
Alvarez has been fighting for nearly eight years. He still has plenty of time to make his mark on the sport, so a loss to one of the best fighters ever won't ruin his career.
Alvarez will continue to work his way up the ladder and try to become an elite boxer. He will grow from his experience in the spotlight, so keep an eye out for him in the future.
