Boxing might not be as widely popular as it once was, but Floyd Mayweather proved the sport is still alive and successful with the record-breaking numbers from his fight against Canelo Alvarez.
The fight, called "The One," was projected to break a number of records for pay-per-view and gate sales. Based on what we've found out so far, it hasn't disappointed.
The Associated Press, via Fox Sports, reported that the fight broke the record for the biggest game in boxing history:
The Nevada Athletic Commission says 16,146 tickets sold for just over $20 million for the Saturday bout at the MGM Grand Garden arena. That averages almost $1,240 per ticket.
Commission executive Keith Kizer said on Thursday the total eclipsed the $18.4 million earned from 17,000 tickets for Mayweather's super welterweight victory over Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand in May 2007.
Mayweather is the best boxer in the world right now, and the fact that this fight brought in so much revenue from ticket sales alone shows just how popular the sport is at the moment.
Granted, fights that don't involve Mayweather aren't nearly as popular, but when Money is in the ring, people are going to watch.
Floyd has disappointed a few times in his career. Some fights have been better than others, but a 45-0 career record with 26 knockouts shows that he always walks away with the win.
Along with an incredible record and unbelievable talent, Floyd draws so many viewers because he's a terrific promoter of himself. From verbally assaulting his opponents before fights to showing off his incredible wealth, Mayweather is both a great fighter and a great entertainer.
As if the gate sales weren't enough, we now know just how much money Mayweather has made so far from the fight. According to Tony Manfred of BusinessInsider.com, a photo of Mayweather's check from the fight was posted by Fight_Ghost on Twitter. The check was worth over $40 million, with a total of $630,000 taken out for anti-doping tests and tickets.
Manfred also mentions that this amount doesn't include pay-per-view sales and that some reports claim Mayweather could make more than $100 million for the fight.
Few industries can bring in as much money as boxing can in one weekend when Mayweather is fighting. While the future of the sport might be up in the air once Mayweather leaves, for now it is bringing in more money than it ever has in the history of the sport.
