When Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes on Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Sept. 14, Canelo must be perfect in order to pull off the huge upset.
Mayweather is boxing's best pound-for-pound fighter. He is 44-0 in his career and has 26 knockouts to his credit. Alvarez is 42-0-1 with 30 knockouts in his career.
There will be a lot on the line here. Mayweather has his WBA Super World light middleweight title on the line, and Alvarez is putting up his WBC light middleweight title.
The records may be similar, but don't be fooled. It would be a big upset if Mayweather were to go down. If Alvarez is going to put a blemish on Mayweather's record, he's going to have to fight smart.
Mayweather isn't going to win via knockout. The 36-year-old hasn't recorded a knockout since 2011, but he has the ability to wear his opponents down.
Mayweather is great at landing punches and has the ability to avoid his opponents' punches. He's a great defensive fighter, which allows him to outlast his opponents.
Canelo may be the type of fighter that has a chance to beat Mayweather. He is a powerful boxer who can knock his opponents out. He has tremendous one-punch power that has led to four knockouts in his last six fights.
Alvarez throws punches at the body rather than going for the big blow up high. With Mayweather's quickness, he is able to duck away from high attacks. Keeping the punches low will give Alvarez a better chance of making contact.
Opponents don't land many punches against Mayweather. Alvarez is going to have to make his punches count rather than trying to throw as many as he can.
Going the distance is not what Alvarez should plan for. He needs to be aggressive and go for the knockout. Mayweather wins by waiting for opponents to wear themselves down, and then he attacks from all different angles.
Alvarez needs to be aggressive in the ring. The 23-year-old has the strength to land powerful punches, and that needs to be the focus. Be the aggressor and make the punches count.
When Mayweather is able to move around and avoid the punches, he can outlast his opponent. His defensive style works great early, and then he knows exactly when to attack.
If Alvarez is going to have a chance, he's going to need to stick to his style and execute. Mayweather is going to be tough to beat, so Canelo needs to be perfect.
