Amir Khan's Camp Denies Reports of a Floyd Mayweather Fight Up Next
Oct 3rd 2013, 02:28, by Mick Akers

Despite reports from the Daily Mail that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan would be linking up in the ring on May 3, 2014, Khan's camp has shot those down, saying they're nothing more than rumors, according to the Guardian.

The Guardian reported Khan's representatives said:

Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead. Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached.

Khan would be meeting Alexander for his IBF welterweight title, but other details such as the site of the fight are still unknown.

Once rumors began to fly about the possibility of Khan (28-3, 19 KOs) forgoing an Alexander fight and opting to enter the Mayweather sweepstakes, fans and media alike sounded off on Khan not being a worthy opponent for the pound-for-pound king.

Most of the naysayers expressed interest in a Mayweather-Danny Garcia showdown instead of Khan, as Garcia (27-0, 16 KOs) is an undefeated champion fresh off his dominating win over the heavy-fisted Lucas Matthysse on the undercard of Mayweather-Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Sept 14.

Add that to Garcia already knocking Khan out in their bout last July and the masses felt it should be an easy decision on who Mayweather should face next.

One of the biggest knocks on Khan besides his KO loss to Garcia and split-decision loss to Lamont Peterson is that his chin is weak. Khan has been rocked several times in his career and has met the canvas more than once, but in all but his three losses he has fought back to win the bouts.

Khan is credited for having tremendous heart in the ring and has shown that although it has gotten him in trouble in several fights, that he isn't afraid to trade punches with anyone. This is despite having the boxing skill to dominate most opponents without the trade of blows.

Khan could strengthen his place as Mayweather's next opponent if he does face Alexander next and is victorious in their proposed bout. If Khan loses or has a lackluster showing against Alexander, then a Mayweather showdown would be only a dream for the British boxer.
