Tyson Fury has revealed he expects David Haye to pull out of their upcoming fight for the second time. In lieu of this, the British fighter already has a back-up opponent lined up, per Kevin Francis of the Daily Star:
I honestly believe he will call the fight off once again. He is dodgy – but this time we have already fixed up somebody to be on stand-by.
I will be going back in heavy training for the fight in a couple of weeks but I am not going to lose out on having a fight this time around. We have a back-up plan.
Fury has been verbal in his distaste for Haye, a feeling that came to a head recently when he launched a spate of abuse towards his next opponent, as well as Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko, per The Guardian.
As posted on Twitter, these NSFW messages have become a regular occurrence from the 24-year-old:
Tensions between the pair have been particularly fraught since Haye pulled out of the fight with a deep cut over his left eye, as reported by Gareth A. Davis of The Telegraph.
While the British heavyweight clash will take place on Feb. 8, 2014, Fury rues his opponent’s decision to postpone the initial encounter, per Francis’ report:
I have gone backwards in the rankings through the way Haye’s behaved. It has been catastrophic for me.
I have been diligently working my way forward but, because of this delay, things have changed and I blame Haye for that.
Fury’s constant stream of chatter is certainly wearing thin at this stage in the fight’s promotion, not helped by the delay. He is clearly trying to pester Haye into a public reaction ahead of the Manchester bout and will continue to test the 33-year-old’s resolve with various claims and threats.
Suggestion that Fury has another opponent lined up should be placed in this category. Although it is entirely feasible the 6’7” fighter has a jobber waiting in the wings, Fury insinuates Haye is running scared of facing him in the ring.
Haye’s lack of response is to be expected while the fighter recovers from injury. Once he’s fit and ready to battle, you can bet the conqueror of Nikolai Valuev will return fire with his own soundbites.
The former WBA heavyweight champion has previous experience with competitors of Fury’s giant size and will be surprised to receive greater abuse than he’s dishing out. With four months until the fight, expect the insults to run and run.
