With an easy victory via unanimous decision over Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO) on Sunday morning in Macau, China, Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO) has gotten his career back on the winning track.
Not that his career was totally off the rails heading into this bout.
Despite suffering two straight losses, Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole reported pre-fight that Pacquiao will be pocketing at least $18 million for his night's work, and that total will likely be closer to $30 million when the pay-per-view buys are figured in.
Obviously, Pacquiao has remained a big draw, and his haul from this bout dwarfs that of his competitor. Not that Rios is likely to be complaining about his earnings. The $4 million Rios is pocketing for his night is over three times what he made in his previous bout.
His last time in the ring, Rios dropped a decision to Mike Alvarado. That was a rematch of a previous bout that Rios won with a stoppage. The first fight was an exciting and action-packed affair.
Still, Rios made $1.25 million for that bout.
His improved haul speaks to the continued drawing power of Pacquiao. However, there is evidence that his recent losses did take a chunk out of boxing value.
Pacquiao, according to the Philippine Star, was guaranteed an average of $25.5 million for each of his last two fights. His diminished earning power has taken a bite out of his pocketbook, but it may have taken an even bigger chunk out of his ego.
Pac-Man has fallen well below the earning power of his adversary, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Money's last time in the ring, he fought Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. That mega fight took in a record $150 million in PPV revenue. This helped push Mayweather's reported earnings at $80 million by Forbes and $100 million by Yahoo! Sports.
Still, let's not feel too bad for Pac-Man. He's doing alright for himself, and with the win, he can look forward to another epic payday in his next fight.
