Coming into their fight, Marcos Maidana swore that Adrien Broner had never seen anyone like him before in a boxing ring.
Well he has now, and all he got for his troubles was his first loss.
Maidana (35-3, 31 KO) swarmed Broner from the outset, dropping him in the second and eighth rounds, to key himself to a stunning unanimous decision win and the WBA Welterweight Championship.
Scores were 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109.
Broner immediately struggled with Maidana's pressure and power. His offense was virtually non-existent whenever the Argentine would let his hands go, and he seemed content to sit back in the hopes his foe would punch himself out.
If you've ever watched Maidana fight, you'd know that wasn't going to happen, and even in the rounds where Broner did well, he never had his opponent in any sort of serious trouble.
For all his talk coming into the ring, Broner stormed from the ring without a word after the official cards were read handing him his first loss, much to the consternation of the Showtime television crew.
In the co-feature, Keith "One Time" Thurman (22-0, 20 KO) scored a spectacular, and brutal, ninth round knockout of veteran tough-guy Jesus Soto Karass (28-9-3, 18 KO) to retain his interim WBA Welterweight Championship.
Soto Karass started the fight well, stunning Thurman with a huge right hand in the early seconds of round one, but was not able to get into scoring range in the majority of rounds.
Thurman boxed beautifully, keeping distance and setting up Soto Karass for his massive power shots. The end came on the second knockdown of the night as a Thurman left, right combination left his foe completely defenseless and forced the referee to call a halt to the action.
On the undercard, Leo Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 KO) scored an impressive, and hard-fought, unanimous decision over a much better than expected Cesar Seda (25-2, 17 KO).
Scores were 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110.
It was probably one of the most competitive fights you'll ever see that was so one-sided on the scorecards. Both men made concerted attempts to go to the body as often as possible, and traded huge power shots in every round.
Seda had his moments, and fought as well as he could, but he simply didn't have enough to keep up with Santa Cruz's pressure and aggression.
In our opening contest, WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO) returned from an 18 month layoff and made short work of overmatched challenger Tomas Kovacs (23-1, 14 KO), winning by third round knockout.
After the fight, it seemed crystal clear to all those watching that he's being groomed to face Bernard Hopkins sometime early next year. In the ring, after the fight, both men expressed a clear interest in the fight.
