Former Boxing Champ Roy Jones Jr. to Run for Mayor
Feb 19th 2014, 13:59, by Dan Carson

As his first order of mayoral business, Roy Jones Jr. would like to focus on education—namely, teaching children the importance of keeping their chin down and their hands up.

Perhaps that’s putting the cart in front of the horse, but the former champ has announced plans to run for mayor in his hometown of Pensacola, Fla., according to TMZ.com

Jones Jr. says he’s gathered 10 times the necessary number of signatures to petition for a spot on the ballot, and says he will focus his efforts on helping the local youth if he were to win office.

“A lot of kids don’t have proper leadership at home,” Jones Jr. told TMZ. “I’m willing to try and be that person for them.”

The former Olympian plans to expand after-school programs. He wants to keep kids off the street, and prefers them leveling each other in a controlled environment under adult supervision.

“I tell the kids, don’t fight in the streets,” Jones Jr. told TMZ. “Go into MMA, go into boxing. Do something that someone can be proud of you for.”

If Jones Jr. follows through with his plan, he’ll be running against incumbent Ashton Hayward—a real estate developer and former model who took office in 2011. Hayward was Pensacola’s first “strong mayor,” meaning his role in the city government came with more independence and authority than his predecessors.

Listen, Pensacola—do you want a “strong mayor” or a jacked mayor? How about one who could literally knock crime the hell out and still have enough in the tank to shake babies and kiss hands?

It’s a no-brainer.

After-school programs must include sparring and Fight Night Round 4.
