Eddie Hearn has confirmed Carl Froch's eagerly anticipated rematch with George Groves will take place at Wembley Stadium on May 31:
With the stage finally set after continuous exchanges between the fighters, Groves has the chance to gain revenge for his controversial Manchester loss in November 2013.
The 25-year-old has avidly campaigned to face Froch again since referee Howard Foster appeared to end the initial bout early. While a date was set prior to the stadium announcement, fans will be extremely fired up to know the encounter will take place in England's most famous sporting arena.
Arsenal's Emirates stadium and the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, were also possibilities but 80,000 are expected inside the arched Wembley structure for the second bout, as reported by Gareth A. Davies of The Telegraph.
Groves, a native of Hammersmith, may receive the majority of the crowd's support after the events of the last fight—plus the fact he was born close to the England football team's national stadium. Even so, Froch isn't intimidated, per The Football Association:
Froch has faced many hostile crowds throughout his career. He suffered defeat against Andre Ward in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, while also losing his original showdown with Mikkel Kessler in Denmark's Messecenter, per Boxrec.
The experienced fighter also earned victory against Arthur Abraham in Helsinki's Hartwall Arena and is more than equipped to perform in front of a bumper crowd, even if they are likely to boo his every move.
Groves beat Paul Smith at Wembley Arena, but he will experience a huge step up in atmosphere just across the road. Wins in Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Resort, the Nuremberg Arena and Belfast's Ulster Hall highlight how he can hold his nerve in difficult circumstances.
Anthony Joshua will appear on the undercard, signalling an event of major interest no matter your allegiance in British boxing.
Wembley has been chosen despite England's national team facing Peru just 24 hours before the rematch. Hearn is understandably excited for the event and posted an image of the promotional poster inside the huge venue:
The promoter believes this will be the "biggest British fight of all time," as noted in his Daily Mail column, and Wembley's world famous name is more than fitting to host the action.
Many will point toward Chris Eubank's 1990 battle with Nigel Benn with this statement in mind, but there's no denying Froch vs. Groves II is likely to gather the most viewers and buzz in British boxing history.
Should Groves level the score, perhaps a famous trilogy will be formed.
