Broner vs. Escobedo: 'The Problem' Must Live Up to His Massive Persona
Jul 23rd 2012, 02:26

Adrien Broner is mega-talented. He has shown that 24 times over. He outclassed Vicente Escobedo on Saturday night, and he's ready for the lightweight division.

He may have entertained some with his tweets of Twinkies after not making weight, and even his fake marriage proposal to his girlfriend after the fight. Call me crazy, but I thought the latter was a bit tasteless.

I won't persecute him, to each his own. If the young lady can take a "joke," that's on her.

But slowly and surely, he is building a persona that will put him in a lonely place. The Floyd Mayweather, Jr. admiration is apparent, but he may not realize that it's not easy being Money May.

Both Mayweather and Broner have come up in rough situations. Broner discusses his beginnings in this video entitled Portrait of a Fighter from HBO.

In a biography style interview from Boxing Insider, Broner was asked who his biggest boxing inspiration is. He said, “Well my number one is Floyd Mayweather. (Did you ever meet him?) I haven’t met him yet. I can’t wait. I’ll probably faint [smiles].”

Even more notable and relevant was Broner's response when asked who the funniest boxer is. He predictably replied, "Floyd, I just love his swag."

Everyone that picks a profession has someone that they admire, it's only natural. But so much of Broner's persona is clearly inspired by Money May.

He even came to the ring against Vicente Escobedo with a "Free Money May" t-shirt.

The problem (no pun intended) can come with carrying the weight of being boxing's most polarizing figure. With Floyd, there is very little middle ground. Most either love or hate him.

Does Broner have the true self confidence and inner-strength to perform when everyone in the room wants him to fail?

I say true with emphasis because anybody can pose, dance, clown and talk trash, but what happens when things get serious? Even Mayweather has been far from infallible in these situations.

The heat he has brought on himself has been immense, and that has nothing to do with his current incarceration.

If Broner's career continues to ascend—and with his talent, there is no reason to think it won't—the stakes will get higher and higher. People will watch just to see him succeed, but just as many will watch to see him crash and burn.

No matter who you are, that's a stressful life. Is The Problem up to it?

He better be, because with his mouth, talent and antics, he's headed right for it. He just may be able to handle the weight, but he isn't making it easy on himself.
