With all the recent chatter of the "super fight" between the best two fighters of the last decade (per Boxing Scene), Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, many have questioned if the fight still matters. The answer is simple; yes.
It doesn't matter if the fight will be taking place almost four years after the initial fight talks started between the two fighters' camps, it still would be the highest grossing fight in history if does end up taking place in 2013 as hoped.
Many have said that the two are exiting their primes and that the fight talk has been going on for so many years now, that many die-hard boxing fans might not even care if the fight is finally signed.
But once you look at the reasons why the bout still matters, they show that sports fans from around the world still want to see if Pacquiao or Mayweather is the pound-for-pound best.
The biggest piece of evidence there is the amount of money both Pacquiao and Mayweather made last year, as the two were the sports world's highest grossing stars over the course of the past year, according to Forbes Magazine.
Mayweather was the top earning athlete of the year according to Forbes—the year included earnings made from June 2011-June 2012—raking in an astounding $85 million off of two fights and Pacquiao came in behind "Money" in second place with $62 million off of two fights of his own.
The two fighters earnings alone suggest that the vast majority of sports fans still want to see the bout, as Pacquiao and Mayweather topped the highest paid athlete list despite not fighting each other.
If the Pacquiao and Mayweather actually get the rumored April 2013 fight signed, then one could expect the two fighters to once again land themselves on top of the highest paid earning list, maybe off the one fight alone.
The "super fight" is projected to smash all earning records and would undoubtedly net both Pacquiao and Mayweather their biggest earnings off one fight in their entire careers.
Money aside, the debate over who would win in a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will continue on, until they finally meet in the ring or the two retire.
There may be no more of a heated debate in all of sports than the "who would win in a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather" debate, so the biggest question in sports would sure still matter to fans around the world.
The biggest factor would be saving the sport of boxing that needs a jump-charge before the two main faces of the sport over the better part of a decade leave the sport without its two biggest stars.
The buzz that would surround the potential bout would be as big of a buzz surrounding any big sporting event including the Super Bowl and March Madness.
Not only could the Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown be a huge success, the undercard on the bout could feature the brightest young stars in boxing, making the event a "passing of the torch" kind of moment for boxing.
Any way you look at it, the "super fight" does still matter and boxing could benefit from the spectacle years after the bout, as it could set up the future faces of the sport that will direly need them once its two biggest cash cows are put out to pasture.
