Amir Khan Expected to Hire Andre Ward Trainer Virgil Hunter
Sep 17th 2012, 13:46

Amir Khan is expected to name Virgil Hunter as has his new trainer, according to a report by Frank Haynes of the Daily Record. Khan, who had been working with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach for the past four years, dropped him on Friday.

There seems to be no love lost between the former duo of Roach and Khan, as it appears the former took a parting shot at his former charge in a recent interview according to the Daily Record article.

I like Amir but they should keep him away from punchers.

Khan has had issues with his chin in the past, having been brutally knocked out twice in his career.

The first knockout loss Khan suffered was to Colombian slugger Breidis Prescott in 2008, which prompted him to hire Roach in the first place.  The second knockout, which came while under the tutelage of Roach, happened this past July in a WBC-WBA junior welterweight title unification bout with Danny Garcia.

According to multiple sources, including Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, Khan had asked Roach to concentrate his trainer efforts solely on him and drop both Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as clients.

Things have not gone so well for Roach in the ring recently, as his three biggest clients—Khan, Pacquiao and Chavez—have all suffered defeats in their most recent outings, which may be a sign that the Hall of Fame trainer is slipping.

Virgil Hunter, on the other hand, seems to be coming into his own as one of the top trainers in the world as evidenced by Andre Ward’s dismantling of Chad Dawson on September 8.

No matter who the Bolton-based fighter hires to train him, Roach is right that he should stay away from big punchers in the future because, it doesn’t matter who trains him, Khan’s chin will always be suspect.
