Canelo Alvarez Would Be Worthy Foe for Floyd Mayweather Sep 16th 2012, 18:15 Floyd Mayweather has plenty of options for his next fight, but the best choice outside of Manny Pacquiao is Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.  Alvarez successfully defended his light middleweight title with a dominant showing against Josesito Lopez on Saturday night. The fight was promoted to be a tough match but Canelo only needed five rounds to defeat his opponent by TKO. The Mexican came into the bout with a great amount of hype. The 22-year-old already has 41 wins and no losses since his professional debut in 2005. In that time, he has won 30 matches by knockout and has defended his light middleweight title five times. Against Lopez, the youngster proved he is worthy. He knocked down his opponent three times and outlanded the challenger 140-89. Alvarez was faster, stronger and just better than the Lopez in the fight. For his next fight, Canelo said that he wants someone "big." ESPN reports that CEO of Golden Boy Productions, Richard Schaefer, wants to set up one of those marquee events, including against Floyd Mayweather. He said: We would certainly be open to making a fight with Floyd and I think that's at the top of Canelo's wish list as well. Other names do include Miguel Cotto and the man that beat Cesar Chavez Jr. tonight, Sergio Martinez. What we really think, first and foremost, is that [Alvarez] is ready. You see the tremendous improvement. He really is ready and we're not afraid to put him in front of any of those names. From Mayweather's perspective, this would be a very good contest as he tries to get himself back into the ring. Obviously fans want to see a fight against Pacquiao, but this matchup might be the second best option. Promoters can discuss the battle between the undefeated fighters, the 13-year age difference between the competitors or the comeback from prison. The story lines alone would net a great turnout in ticket sales and pay-per-view orders. Mayweather is still the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, but Alvarez is the future of the sport.
