The pay-per-view bout between Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. promises to be full of excitement, and if the lead-up to Saturday's clash in Las Vegas is a prelude of things to come, boxing fans can rejoice.
The most interesting aspect of this wildly-anticipated fight seems to be the difference in styles between these two leading men. Each has his own unique brand of fighting, and come Saturday, will use that to try and keep the other off balance.
The 37-year-old Martinez comes into the match with a record of 49-2-2 (28 KO). He is an extremely aggressive fighter and uses his unpredictable nature on the mat to confuse and tire his opponents.
This could come in handy on Saturday and will likely be a point of emphasis for Chavez Jr. Being a lefty is also an extremely difficult thing to prepare for, and it has certainly helped him disguise certain punches during his career.
Chavez is pure speed and power. He can do damage quickly, if given the opportunity, so it will be interesting to see how he approaches the wild style of his opponent.
As things stand, Martinez is considered one of the best five or six fighters in the world, while Chavez is constantly chided for riding the coattails of his famous boxing father, Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez' record does speak for itself, though, as the 26-year-old is 46-0-1 with 32 KO.
Nevertheless, this is the biggest fight of both their careers, so going toe-to-toe with a boxer of Martinez' caliber is probably the truest test of his career.
Their backgrounds, while not glaringly important factors in the fight, further show the gulf that exists between them.
As Ron Borges of the Boston Herald pointed out, Martinez grew up in poverty and had to earn his way to boxing prominence. Chavez, meanwhile, comes from a boxing family and has used that name to get fights he may not have deserved.
The sport of boxing may not have the level of followers it deserves, but matchups like this will make casual fans begin to tune in.
Both fighters bring unique skills to the ring, and their contrasting styles will make for dynamic fight come Saturday night.
