After signing a huge deal with Showtime, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is understandably excited about the deal and won't take Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero lightly in the first fight of the new deal (per ESPN.com).
Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) said he knows he can't overlook Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), something that most media have focused on since the bout was made official Tuesday. The other point that is being looked at closely is Mayweather's inactivity in the ring, which really shouldn't be a big deal since Mayweather has fought once per year since 2009.
Mayweather's mega-deal with Showtime is for up to six fights in a 30-month period and from the sounds of it, Mayweather just might fight all six.
"The fans want to see a lot more of me," Mayweather said. "I will give you excitement."
If Mayweather does follow through with all six bouts, it is said the contract will be the richest individual athlete contract in sports history.
As usual, Mayweather was asked if a fight with Manny Pacquiao would take place in the future, but mentioning the knockout-loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez, it doesn't seem too optimistic. Mayweather does not think never fighting Pacquiao should affect his legacy, as he said one fight shouldn't make or break a 43-fight career:
"If people don't know, Floyd Mayweather's not scared of (any) opponent," Mayweather said. "You just don't wake up overnight and just become (the best) pound-for-pound (fighter). And sometimes people talk about my legacy. If my legacy was based upon just one fight, then I didn't need to fight 43 fights."
Something that would diminish Mayweather's legacy is a loss and with how excited Mayweather seems about his future in the sport, specifically with Showtime, it is safe to say we should see his undefeated streak extended to 44 fights on May 4.
