Floyd Mayweather: Canelo Alvarez Would Be Best Choice for Money's Next Bout Nov 11th 2012, 16:38 Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, come on down! You're the next contestant on Floyd Mayweather Jr's list—at least you should be. Undefeated, powerful and fearless, the 22-year-old Alvarez's aggressive style would make for an incredible bout against the 35-year-old champion, a master tactician who knows more about boxing and how to combat different styles than most of us can even begin to comprehend. But forget about the in-ring action for a second, because as we've all come to understand, that's secondary for the aptly named "Team Money." Mayweather knows that fighting around Cinco de Mayo is a lucrative thing, having been involved in a number of major bouts around that time: Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, "Sugar" Shane Mosley in 2010 and Miguel Cotto this past May. Who better to take on than an up-and-coming Mexican fighter on one of the country's biggest holidays? The pay-per-view numbers would be through the roof, and quite frankly, could be record-setting. For a guy like Mayweather, a fight with Alvarez should have him drooling at the dollars it would bring in. And let's be real about something. It's obvious that a fight against Manny Pacquiao isn't going to happen, with the same excuses constantly regurgitated by Mayweather and his camp, whether it's Bob Arum, a blood test or how to split the money generated. A rematch with Miguel Cotto? Not going to happen anytime soon, with Cotto taking on Austin Trout on December 1. Sergio Martinez? He's having knee surgery on Monday and has stated that his next fight will be in Argentina. Hard to imagine Mayweather agreeing to fight there. (h/t Yahoo! Sports) There isn't anyone else worthwhile for Mayweather to get into the ring with. Sure, he could book a bout against someone who has no business being in the ring with him, but that won't result in major PPV buys or generate anywhere near as much interest as a fight with Alvarez would.
