Floyd Mayweather: Robert Guerrero Has Better Upset Odds Than Canelo Alvarez
Dec 27th 2012, 18:28

For Floyd Mayweather to be defeated, his foe needs to have a mental edge.

Robert Guerrero would have a mental edge.

Many hope Mayweather’s next bout is against Canelo Alvarez. The undefeated 22-year-old Mexican may be the most promotable opponent, but Guerrero is hungrier and would give Pretty Boy Floyd a run for his money.

Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com reported that Mayweather vs. Guerrero is nearly a done deal for May 4th. And if the fight goes down, The Ghost wouldn’t be remembered as just another victim of Money May.

Dan Rafael of ESPN ranks Guerrero as the No. 4 welterweight fighter in the world, behind just Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley. He’s won his last eight fights by unanimous decision, technical knockout or referee technical decision.

But once again, it’s the mental aspect of competition that’d give Guerrero a fighting chance against Mayweather.

According to Brian Campbell of ESPN, Guerrero called Mayweather out after he defeated Andre Berto in November.

I want to fight the best; I'm looking for Floyd Mayweather next. “Pretty Boy,” let's do it, you know? I'm here. This is my second fight at 147 pounds and a unanimous decision against a great champion who is no joke. I came and showed up and did my thing.

Later that night, Guerrero took to Twitter to tempt Mayweather.

I told everyone I ain't no joke. @floydmayweather I'm coming for you! You can run but you can't hide. I want to thank all my fans. God bless

It’s quite obvious Guerrero isn’t intimidated by the legendary fighter. But his desire to face Mayweather doesn’t mean much. After all, what boxer would pass up a Money May payday?

What does matter, however, is that Guerrero’s fire will be fueled by a rather potent motivator.

His wife recently overcame a battle with cancer, and according to Damian Calhoun of the Orange County Register, her victory greatly inspires Guerrero in the ring. In a conference call before his bout with Berto, he said of his wife’s ability to conquer cancer:

It gives you a lot of determination. To get in there and be the best, and do what you love to do. The situation being there with my wife, seeing what she had to go through, it makes you step back and look at the bigger picture. She was out there fighting for her life, and I have the privilege to do what I love to do in the ring and get paid for it and be successful at it.

No boxer in the world has the pure talent to beat Mayweather.

But let’s just say Guerrero has the “eye of the tiger” which would be needed to stay competitive.
