In the wake of his dominant victory over Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night, Floyd "Money" Mayweather has had nothing but good things to say about his young opponent as well as his camp. A tasteless meme poking fun at Alvarez's promoter--Oscar De La Hoya-- was posted to Mayweather's Instagram account on Monday, but Mayweather has since apologized for the incident.
According to TMZ, the since-deleted meme referenced De La Hoya's issues with substance abuse.
De La Hoya voluntarily checked into rehab last week, according to ESPN's Dan Rafael, which caused him to miss the fight, which was co-promoted by his Golden Boy Promotions as well as Mayweather Promotions.
While Mayweather and De La Hoya have had their problems over the years, stemming largely from their fight in 2007, which Mayweather won by split decision, Mayweather was extremely regretful that the meme was posted.
Mayweather went to great lengths to atone for the situation, including this tweet in support of De La Hoya.
"Money" also posted a message on his Instagram account in which he explained the situation and apologized for it. Mayweather claimed that he did not authorize the meme, and he said that he is 100 percent behind De La Hoya.
De La Hoya figures to have a long and difficult fight ahead of him as he has battled alcohol and cocaine addiction in the past, according to Rafael. It's nice to see that Mayweather is sensitive to that even if he initially came off looking like a monster.
Mayweather beat Alvarez with ease on Saturday as Canelo very well may have been adversely affected by the absence of his mentor. Mayweather let his fists do the talking, and now that Mayweather has cleared up the incident in question, it's time for all parties involved to move on.
