When Floyd "Money" Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) squares off against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather will earn a guaranteed purse of $41.5 million, according to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.
Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer told Rafael exactly what the monster payday means: "This record purse shows you three things. No. 1, it shows you how big Floyd Mayweather is, which we all knew. But it shows you that he is not just breaking records, he [is] breaking them by far. And third, it just shows you [how] big this fight with Canelo is. It's insane."
That record-breaking payday will help fuel Alvarez more than Mayweather, though.
The previous watermark was $32 million (Money earned that sum against both Miguel Cotto and Robert Guerrero), but the hype around this battle with the undefeated Canelo has pushed that total through the roof.
While Mayweather and his team feel they have earned the huge payday, there is little doubt Alvarez will be using the difference in payouts as motivation to fight even harder.
Per the same report, Canelo is expected to make over $10 million, though his earnings have not been disclosed yet.
The Mexican star will look at the vast difference in payouts and understand he is working just as hard as Mayweather in his training camp. While Alvarez is working with the same intensity and stress level as his opponent, he will make a quarter of what Money will bank from this event.
The one-sided payout is a natural part of the business (the bigger name always receives the bigger purse), but Canelo will use his understandable frustration about making substantially less to help fuel his battle against Mayweather.
As if Alvarez needed more motivation, the one-sided payout and the notion from Mayweather’s camp that Mayweather would have earned this total no matter who was stepping into the ring with him will set the stage for Canelo to find serious purpose.
The Mexican star not only wants to get revenge for what he should consider an uneven pay distribution, but he also wants to win this fight so he can one day achieve a similar payday.
If Mayweather's guaranteed earnings fuel Alvarez to fight even harder, this could be the perfect storm that rocks the boxing world. The stage has been set for Canelo to steal the victory and make a huge amount of money on his own.
