Every time Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. steps into the ring, he tends to break some sort of record.
In last weekend's fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, a record of almost $150 million in pay-per-view money was generated in total, according to ESPN's SportsCenter.
Mayweather would finish the fight victorious in a majority decision as Canelo took him to all 12 rounds but was unable to rattle the undefeated champion. The outcome led to judge CJ Ross stepping down after she turned in a controversial scorecard, as reported by Steve Busfield of The Guardian.
Even though Mayweather reached a new height with the PPV money, he actually broke his own record in the process. His fight with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 previously held the record at $137 million, per Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times.
Nobody doubted that Mayweather's fight with Alvarez was one of the most highly anticipated fights in recent memory, but the fact that it raised the most money of any fight in history is a big shock.
The excitement for Mayweather-Canelo reached epic proportions even before the fight. Many boxing fans tuned in to see if the 23-year-old could use his youth to his advantage and put together his daunting power enough to rattle Mayweather. He couldn't, and it resulted in another 12-round victory for boxing's biggest active star.
Mayweather improved to 45-0 with the win, and there was never any real threat to his title. He used his typical swift defensive tactics to avoid Canelo's power punches and top his overmatched opponent.
If anything can make Mayweather's reported $40 million-plus check from the fight look small, it's these record-breaking pay-per-view numbers that came out Wednesday.
