You stand to gain some nice money Saturday if you play your cards right.
This weekend brings the superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez. While boxing isn't the sport it once was, these kinds of events garner major attention from the sporting community. That leads to a lot of action at the casinos in Las Vegas. Millions upon millions of dollars will be bet on this fight.
Mayweather is the favorite, so unless you're going to drop a ton of cash, you'll want to bet on something that can produce a better payoff without as much of an investment.
Here are three bets that are solid long shots for Saturday's fight. Odds are courtesy of Bovada.
Fight Does Not Go the Distance: +225
The odds here aren't too gargantuan. After all, you only have two options to choose from. However, all the smart money is on Mayweather taking this fight to the judges' scorecards. It'll be another fight in which he defends and defends and defends and eludes his opponent's blows.
It only takes one punch for Alvarez to end this fight. Unlike Robert Guerrero, Canelo can make Mayweather pay when he leaves himself open. Alvarez has enough power and is talented enough to take advantage whenever he has the opportunity.
But with the way Alvarez goes right at his opponent, Mayweather could get a surprise knockout in. Both Victor Ortiz and Ricky Hatton were knocked out because their strategies were too offensive, not necessarily because Mayweather was looking to end the fight.
Although Alvarez is a much smarter fighter, he could bite off a little more than he can chew.
Fight Goes Under 7.5 Rounds: +375
If you think the fight will end early, this is a sweet spot. You could make some nice money here.
Should the fight end before a decision, it won't get much further than the sixth round.
This is kind of the point of no return for Canelo. The longer this bout goes past the halfway point, the more it shifts in Mayweather's favor.
Money will ease more and more into his defensive style from about the eighth round on. He'll likely have the fight locked up, so he's not going to do anything to get himself knocked out before the final bell.
If Alvarez cannot end it by the eighth round, he's got little chance of winning. And Mayweather won't be looking to end the fight with one punch.
Canelo Alvarez to Win in Rounds 4-6: 14-1
If you're feeling really adventurous, you can lay down some money on Alvarez winning this fight.
With these odds, you'll get a solid payoff if Mayweather goes down between the fourth and sixth rounds, but it's not such a long shot that it has absolutely zero chance of happening.
Alvarez's best strategy will be to attack Mayweather early and often. If he can tag Money in the first couple of rounds, he will have worn down Mayweather with jabs and combinations, which could set up a big knockout in the middle of the fight.
