Amir Khan has set his sights on getting into the ring with Adrien Broner, following the recent collapse of his expected fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., as reported by ESPN.co.uk.
British fighter Kell Brook had been keen to step into the void left by Mayweather, but the Bolton fighter appears to have dismissed this challenge. Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn suggested that Khan should fight his man next, per ESPN.
However, Khan took to Twitter to challenge Broner instead and to address Brook with a few choice words of his own:
Broner, 24, has an impressive record, having only lost once in his 29 professional fights, per BoxRec. Nicknamed "The Problem," the American boxer has an impressive knockout rate of 75.86. He would give Khan a real battle and the fight would be a tight contest.
Hearn has been touting a fight between Khan and Brook since October of last year. Speaking of the possibility of his boxer or Broner fighting Khan, he said to Sky Sports:
Everybody wants the Khan fight. Khan will want the Mayweather fight of course and I think that's likely to happen. If it doesn't, I think Khan-Brook becomes a real possibility. I've always mentioned it to Amir and I've told him it's a huge money fight. It's by far the biggest payday of his career, by far, but it doesn't equate to the same kind of money as the Mayweather fight.
Brook has come a long way in the past few years but Khan is correct: A contest against him now, as interesting as it would be for the British public, will not strengthen his position in attaining a super-fight against Mayweather.
Broner's recognition in the U.S. is something that Khan will want to tag himself onto. He knows a win against the American would strengthen his position in the eyes of the boxing community and for the TV companies that organise the biggest fights.
Furthermore, Khan already holds a win over Marcos Maidana, the man who stunned Broner in his recent outing.
It is questionable whether Khan is ready for Mayweather at this time, or if he will ever be ready for a boxer now considered the best of his generation. As Mayweather gets older, the chances of beating him will increase, so if Khan is patient and waits another year he might well become the first boxer to ever down the legendary champion.
Brook is not too far away from the top level, but he has to further his reputation. Fighting Khan would have been perfect for him as he has the ability to cause him huge problems, but there is no attraction in the bout for Khan.
Khan knows it is a lose-lose for him right now and steering clear of a fighter looking for a big scalp is a clever decision.
