Floyd Mayweather Jr. has agreed to face Amir Khan in a much-anticipated big-money bout—if the Englishman can overcome Adrien Broner first.
"Money" spoke honestly on Twitter, telling Khan he can earn the contract he has longed for with a victory over his American associate:
Khan responded angrily by retweeting the messages and suggesting Mayweather is one of many fighters to be wasting his time (NSFW):
The Bolton-based boxer previously baited Broner with the suggestion of a fight, signalling he is desperate to face Mayweather, despite many believing he has little chance of overcoming the 37-year-old.
Mayweather's response is perhaps out of character, given that he has previously appeared non-committal to a future bout with Khan, as noted by his decision to face Marcos Maidana, per Sky Sports.
Khan reportedly penned a contract in December to face Mayweather, but no mutual agreement was ever made.
Khan's potential showdown with Broner has yet to be officially sanctioned, but Khan can take heart from the 24-year-old's unanimous-decision loss to Maidana on Dec. 14, 2013. The Brit beat Maidana via the same method in 2010, so he will feel Mayweather can be reached with a confident performance.
Khan is on a run of two straight wins after suffering defeats against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. He has beaten Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz to gain momentum once again, per BoxRec, producing an overall record of 28-3-0.
Broner's loss to Maidana is the only blemish of an otherwise dominant career of 27-1-0. Mayweather, meanwhile, has very little to prove after winning 45 consecutive fights, but he may feel he has to halt Khan's talk before hanging up his gloves.
The public have longed for "Pretty Boy" to face Manny Pacquiao in previous years, but with the Filipino legend losing bouts against Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez, the potential contest has lost some of its appeal.
Although Khan has managed to drum up plenty of talk surrounding a fight with Mayweather, much of it has come from his camp. He appears intent on riling the American to breaking point in order to receive a shot. The contest would be win-win for Khan, who would land a massive payday and go in as a major underdog.
Khan accused Mayweather of taking "the easy route" by selecting Maidana, as confirmed by BBC Sport. The situation could become even more heated if Khan faces Broner, with the duo likely to appear on Mayweather's undercard, per Sky Sports.
Mayweather's public announcement finally provides Khan with a clear opportunity. Should he agree to the terms and beat Broner, there's little Mayweather can do other than accept a fight.
Khan's tactics appear to slowly be chipping away at his potential future opponent, who will be keen to quash the Englishman's confidence in the ring.
