Martinez vs. Chavez Jr: Sergio's Intense Trash Talk Adds Intrigue to Title Bout
Sep 15th 2012, 16:17

Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs) has added major intrigue to Saturday night's middleweight title bout between he and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (46-0-1, 32 KOs).

The two will square off inside the ring in Las Vegas, Nevada, with Martinez defending The Ring middleweight title, and Chavez defending his WBC middleweight title.

The stage was instantly set earlier this week when Martinez made some jaw-dropping comments about his plans to effectively destroy Chavez Jr. on Saturday night.

Here are Martinez's threatening words of advice to Chavez in lead-up to this weekend (via ESPN.com's Dan Rafael):

I will break his face a thousand times...this will not be an easy knockout. I will punish him a lot. And after that, I will knock him out and he will suffer a lot...I hope somebody in your corner -- the doctor, your team, your management -- will be sure to stop the fight, because I will continue punishing you. You're not supposed to take this fight, because it will be very painful for you.

That is championship-caliber trash talk from one of boxing's best.

At age 37, Martinez has been around the sport long enough and won enough fights to deserve his pre-fight rant. Whether it was inappropriate, the anticipation for this weekend's bout has grown tenfold.

After all, it's Chavez who has the most to prove on Saturday night in Vegas.

He is still struggling to escape the shadow of his father, boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez, and each and every one of his triumphs will continue to be compared to his dad's.

At the same time, Chavez's burden is also an advantage, as he has had a much easier road to the top of the sport compared to Martinez.

That's why the Argentine is so fired up about Saturday night's fight. And who can blame him for being bitter?

Maybe his trash talk is a little out of line, but there is no denying that it has added tons of intrigue to Saturday's middleweight title showdown in Vegas.
