Newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be mixing it up again next year. After the success of their recent fight in Las Vegas, it appears as though Dallas Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones would like to host a second fight between the two at his billion dollar state-of-the-art stadium.
According to a report by Ryan Burton of boxingscene.com, Jones called Top Rank CEO Bob Arum after the fight and offered up his stadium in Arlington for a rematch in 2013.
A rematch between Chavez and Martinez would be a huge event and could have a live attendance of over 100,000 at the football stadium.
Dallas Cowboys Stadium has hosted two of Manny Pacquiao’s fights in the past.
Chavez has fought in Texas a number of times and is a huge draw there, but his fights in the Lone Star State have been shrouded in controversy.
When the former WBC middleweight champion Chavez made the second defense of his title in February against Marco Antonio Rubio in Texas, there was an issue with the post-fight drug tests. Chavez was to be tested after the fight according to the WBC rules, but the godson of Jose Sulaiman, the WBC president, never was.
In his next outing in Texas, Chavez again was caught up in a drug-testing hullabaloo. Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward questioned the circumstances surrounding Chavez’s pre-fight drug test and whether or not his fighter had competed on a level playing field.
Chavez tested positive for a banned diuretic that can be used to mask PED use following a 2009 fight in Las Vegas.
If Martinez agrees to take the fight in Texas next year, he will need to make sure every precaution is taken to ensure that everything is on the up and up.
