Broner vs. Maidana Results: Takeaways from 'The Problem's' Loss in Marquee Bout Dec 15th 2013, 12:00, by Scott Polacek Adrien Broner entered the Alamodome in San Antonio on Dec. 14 as the favorite against Marcos Maidana, but once the boxing actually began, it was a different story.  "The Problem," who is nothing if not a lightning rod in the boxing community, was stunned by Maidana (35-3, 31 KO) in dramatic fashion. Maidana took home a unanimous-decision win and the WBA Welterweight Championship with scores of 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109. Let’s dig into some of the critical takeaways from the stunning result.   Undefeated No More Broner, who was the WBA welterweight champion, sported a perfect 27-0 record (22 KO) entering the bout with Maidana. He was a rising star in the boxing world, and that undefeated mark next to his name was the major reason. He had visions of becoming a must-see pay-per-view attraction as he became a more well-known name. Well, the best way to do that would have been by winning this event against a boxer whom he was favored to beat.  Any visions that he had of becoming the next Floyd Mayweather took a significant hit with the loss to Maidana on Saturday.   Maidana’s Physicality Was a Problem It wasn’t just the loss that was notable—it was the way he was beaten. Maidana is known for his physicality and solid punching, and he unleashed that on Broner. The Argentine overwhelmed him with a spree of powerful punches early, and Broner never recovered. He often opted to sit back and take the blows.  Broner never seemed to have much of a chance as the fight wore on, and it was clear that Maidana’s physicality was going to prevail. The Problem just didn't supply enough offense to overcome what he was up against.   Still a Lightning Rod The fact that Broner’s nickname is The Problem should raise some red flags if you aren’t a fan of brash personalities in sports. From incessant trash talk, arrests and certain infamy on the Internet, Broner is one of boxing’s biggest lightning rods. Either you love him or hate him, and those who actively cheer against Broner were pleased with the results in San Antonio. Despite all the talk from Broner before the bout, he stormed from the ring without a word after the cards were read.
