Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: Boxer's Progress Will Be Impeded by Sergio Martinez
Sep 15th 2012, 12:00

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has done a tremendous job in his most recent fights, but when all is said and done Sergio Martinez is a better boxer.

Chavez, 26, is coming off a splendid seventh-round TKO of southpaw Andy Lee in El Paso, Texas, and his record of 46-0-1-1 is hard to ignore. Against Lee, Chavez showed what makes him dangerous: his power, youth and chin.

Chavez ended the fight by connecting on a right uppercut that knocked Lee's head back, then proceeding to unleash a barrage of punches before referee Laurence Cole stopped the bout. It is particularly because of his showing against Lee that people think twice about calling Martinez the inevitable winner when the two meet on Saturday in Las Vegas.

But despite some of Martinez's recent struggles against Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker, we must not forget what kind of fighter he is.

Keep in mind, despite Martinez going into the later rounds with Macklin and Barker, he still caused Macklin's corner to stop the fight in the 11th round and knocked out Barker. While you expected him to get the job done sooner, he still got the job done eventually.

There's also the fact that, despite giving up 11 years to Chavez, Martinez (49-2-2) is still a quicker, smarter and more skilled boxer. He's always had the quickness, but his smarts and skills have developed through years of battles. His footwork in particular distances him from Chavez in this fight.

Chavez still has a lot to fight for at a young age, but he'll learn what seasoning can do for a boxer when he faces Martinez. Martinez isn't the top middleweight and No. 3 pound-for-pound boxer in the world for nothing.
