WBC light middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and The Ring middleweight champion Sergio Martinez are headed for easy wins in separate venues in Las Vegas Saturday night.
Alvarez (49-0-1, 29 KOs), will be facing Joselito Lopez (30-4-1,18 KOs), who is fresh off a victory over Victor Ortiz June 23 at the Staples Center. Martinez (49-2-2) will face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1).
The Alvarez-Lopez showdown will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Martinez-Chavez fight for the WBC middleweight title will take place at the Thomas and Mack Center.
Lopez hit the spotlight after breaking Ortiz's jaw in the ninth round of his fight against Ortiz. Lopez fought Ortiz only after Andre Berto's failure to face Ortiz in a rematch due to his positive test for a performance-enhancing drug, according to latimes.com.
The 28-year-old American, who hails from Riverside, Calif., stands 5'10" with a reach of 72". Lopez is an orthodox fighter.
Alvarez, who shamed the aging Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last May 5 to retain his WBC light middleweight title via a unanimous decision, is favored to win.
The 22-year-old unbeaten champion from Mexico stands 5'9" with a reach of 71". Alvarez is likewise an orthodox fighter.
In the fight press conference, Alvarez said via latimes.com that he understands that Lopez "throws a lot of punches and good combinations." But he said he will counter that "by making use of my experience."
Lopez's trainer, Henry Ramirez told la.times.com that his fighter will "push the action."
"Canelo is very deliberate," Ramirez said, "and we have to make him uncomfortable right away."
In the Martinez-Chavez Jr. fight, the Argentinian boxing idol is slightly favored to win.
Chavez Jr. certainly has what it takes to beat the Argentinian star, but critics of Chavez say Martinez has more experience and skill.
Martinez, who usually fights with both hands down to lure his opponent to come closer for a clean shot, is coming off an impressive victory over Matthew Macklin of Ireland March 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Since losing to Paul Williams in 2009 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., Martinez has won his last five fights. In a rematch held at the same venue in 2010, Martinez knocked out Williams one minute into the second round to retain his Ring middleweight title.
